You gotta see this!

Our local bridge unit, 166, held its Easter Regional April 15-20 in Toronto. Part of it was a little tournament for the kids who are learning to play bridge in various Toronto schools. Kudos to Flo Belford and all the volunteers who made this such a success! Take a look at the 440 kids in action at  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6wPWDYMNqw

Hurray!

Can you tell me more about the programs that led to the tournament: (1) how was the team able to interest the schools in adding bridge teaching to the curriculum; (2) how were kids recruited to participate in the teaching programs, given that so few young people nowadays are familiar with bridge; and (3) how young is the target audience (the kids on the video seemed closer to elementary school age than to middle school age)? Relatedly, as new students enter the program, how is the teaching of returning students coordinated with the teaching of the new students?

Thank you for sharing the video.

Might someone on the teaching team be interested in contacting Sue Munday, an associate editor of ACBL Bulletin?

Had trouble viewing the site. Need more direction.

For decades, Bobby has been pleading for this very connection .. getting bridge into Zone 2 schools. European and Asian schools have a big jump on us. It is time the ABCL made a serious concerted effort to get to the right people in the educational field to institute bridge into our school curricula!! The future of our game is in the hands of our youth and we cannot afford to lose a moment.

Paul, thanks for the info and to Jeff for his sincere enthusiasm on this potentially incredible project!! You are just what the doctor ordered.

Hi Paul,

To continue Judy’s thank you comment, we need Horn Lake and the ACBL BOD’s to prescribe bridge to be inserted into the USA’s educational system and be sold to them via marketing, preferably by salesmen who, in addition to loving playing the game, are totally indoctrinated in the terrific educational opportunities via problem solving, numeracy, legal partnership communication, everyday applied logic, active ethics, and non-violent realistic competitiveness.

The published rave notices from many different countries in Europe, no doubt many now from China (still early in their bridge education), and soon to be from the bridge pioneering in Toronto, should be featured in the campaign material. All it takes is an intense promotional effort, some lucky timing, but without which we will likely be doomed to accepting a gradual diminishing of the game and eventually left with only some old players rendition of “High Card Wins”, a sad ending, similar to the scene from the last scene from “The Planet of the Apes” in what used to be vibrant NYC.

Hi Judy,

If you still haven’t been able to access the youth tournament video, you can do so on the Unit 166 web site unit166.ca by clicking on “CBC Video: School Bridge”.

Hi Paul,

I finally navigated to the site and pray someone who is a determined advocate of bridge in the schools is on the move. I CANNOT think of any project more influential for the preservation of our game.

Prices are a little steep, but it’s Australia it’s to be expected. Not too bad though. Curious how much the GBA and N64 titles we end up being not to mention the eventual GC titles.
