How “expert” are you ?
BBO has various ways of describing one’s “expertise” – Private, Novice, Beginner,Intermediate, Advanced, Expert, World Class.
As there are an astounding number of “experts” on BBO, it was a surprise yesterday to partner one humble enough to classify himself as merely “advanced”.
On one hand, where I held J983 876 1042 AQ7 , the auction went as follows:
South Me North “Advanced Partner”
P P P 1C
2H X P 2S
P P 3H P
P P
3H duly made, and we were -140.
Now, as an “expert” yourself, and given that your “advanced partner” let 3H sit, what is your picture of your “advanced partner”‘s hand?
Did you envision AK10642 A J87 J108 ?
Always eager to learn, I queried partner as to why he opened 1C instead of 1S. His reply – “shut up beginner”.
The bright side is that now I don’t have to fret over what my BBO classification should be – been done for me!
I play as ‘INTERMEDIATE” to avoid being misunderstood by those “EXPERT” players.
Years ago Justin Lall played as a “BEGINNER” from Colombia (as I recall.) (At that time I had no idea of who he was, but he was obviously an excellent player, especially for a beginner!)
Is a wron impresion that i have ?
But the same who complain about “too many experts” on BBO, think that if you put “advanced” on your profile, you must be a beginner.
Take the experience: put “expert” on your pro and look how many invites you will get – call yourselve “advanced” and…..

You could just play with the robots (GIBS) in BBO and avoid the humans with their self-awarded inflated levels of expertise as I do? A further advantage of partnering robots is that they don’t seem to mind when you swear at them for their dumb bidding and play!
If you really do prefer to play with humans then check out their flags as players from different countries seem to exagerrate their abilities by different amounts (on average) – the Brits and Israelis for example are usually a good bet, often exaggerating by only 1 level, where as a Turkish ‘expert’ is anyone who learnt to play more than a week ago!
It’s reminds me of the old joke about the sarcastic expert asking his partner when he learnt to play and whilst his partner is trying to remember, he adds that it was clearly yesterday but he just wants to know at what time!
I specifically won’t play with an ‘expert’ I don’t know on BBO.
That’s a weghotloulht–ut answer to a challenging question
